What is a CBT?
A Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) course is a one-day course you must complete before riding a motorcycle, scooter or moped on the road in the UK. It is not a test in the formal sense — it is a structured day of training that ends with a certificate (a DL196) when you and your instructor are both satisfied you can ride safely.
Once you hold a valid CBT certificate, you can ride a motorcycle or scooter up to 125cc on the road with L-plates for up to two years. The CBT is also the required first step before taking your Direct Access training and full motorcycle licence tests.
What Your CBT Covers
The DVSA splits a CBT into five elements. We go at your pace through every one.
1. Introduction & Eye Check
We confirm your licence, run an eyesight check (reading a number plate at 20 metres), and talk you through what to expect from the day.
2. Off-Road Controls
You learn the bike’s controls and how to start, stop, brake and steer in our safe off-road area before going near the road.
3. Off-Road Riding Skills
Slow-speed manoeuvres, U-turns, figure-of-eight, emergency stop, and a controlled introduction to riding the bike with confidence.
4. Road Safety Briefing
A practical talk about hazards, road positioning, what to expect from other road users, and how to ride safely as a new rider.
5. On-Road Riding
A minimum of two hours of on-road riding under our supervision, with radio guidance. We only head out when you are confident — never before.
At the end of the day, if you and your instructor are both happy, you receive your DL196 CBT certificate.

How long does a CBT take?
A typical CBT day runs from around 8:30am to 4:00pm, including breaks. The exact length depends on the size of the group and how quickly everyone progresses. There is a minimum On-Road riding time of two hours, set by the DVSA.
What is the difference between a CBT and Direct Access (DAS)?
A CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) is a one-day course that lets you ride a 125cc bike on the road with L-plates. Direct Access (DAS) is the full progression that lets you take your Module 1 and Module 2 tests and ride any size motorcycle without restriction. Most riders start with a CBT and step up to DAS later.
Can I take a CBT if I have never ridden a motorbike before?
Absolutely — that is exactly what the CBT is designed for. We begin with the basic controls in a safe off-road area and build your skills step by step. Most of our students arrive having never sat on a motorcycle in their lives.
What if I do not finish the CBT in one day?
If you and your instructor agree you are not yet ready to head out on the road, you do not fail — there is no pass or fail on a CBT. We simply book you in for another session to complete the parts that need more time. This is more common than people think and nothing to worry about.
Do I need to bring my own motorcycle?
No. We provide a well-maintained 125cc training motorcycle, a helmet and a jacket as part of the £225 course fee. You only need to bring your provisional or full UK driving licence and weather-appropriate clothing.
